The 123 traffic signals that were turned off due to the extreme heat on May 9 will be reactivated within a week.
To ensure that commuters, particularly two-wheeler drivers, did not have to wait at junctions in the scorching heat, the traffic department decided to close the 123 signals at traffic junctions with low vehicular movement.
However, traffic signals on roads with heavy traffic movement continued to function as usual.
With temperatures on the decline and monsoon likely to hit the state by mid-June, the department will now reopen the signals in a week.
Traffic signals at Umiya Hall, Prabhat Chowk, Prahladnagar, Anandnagar Crossroad, Rahul Tower Cross Roads and most of the traffic signals in eastern Ahmedabad and SP Ring Road with low traffic flow were shut down.
Mayanksinh Chavda, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said that now that the temperature has dropped and the monsoon is expected to hit Gujarat soon, all 123 traffic signals will be reactivated. He claimed that the department worked with AMC officials to synchronise the waiting times of multiple traffic signals on the same road, ensuring that commuters do not have to wait too long when a signal turns red.
Ahmedabad on Tuesday recorded an average temperature of 41.6 degree Celsius. The IMD has said no major change in temperature is expected until the monsoon hits the state on June 15.
