The harsh summer has resulted in reduction in the road accidents in major cities of Gujarat due to limited movement of people.
According to data compiled by 108 EMRI services, road accidents in Gujarat’s major cities have decreased as people’s mobility has decreased.
As per the 108 EMRI data, in the first two weeks of May, accidents in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Surat decreased by 3.65%, 9.95% and 10.45% respectively. Whereas due to reverse rush towards native places due to the summer vacation, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Dang, Jamnagar and Mahisagar districts witnessed an increase in accidents by 110%, 51.25%, 43.75%, 38.46% and 34.15% respectively.
T108 EMRI official Vikas Bihani said, “Normally, the occurrence of accidents is more in major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot compared to smaller cities and towns. Due to the summer season, the movement of people on the road has decreased, particularly in the afternoons when people prefer to stay indoors. Normally, maximum accidents take place during evening rush hours of 5 pm to 7 pm.”
Bihani added, “Due to the vacation, people generally visit their native places in rural parts of the districts. Hence, rural parts of the districts have registered an increase in accidents.”
