The quantum of sentence to Fenil Goyani, who brutally murdered Grishma Vekariya on February 12 after she rejected his love for her, is likely to be announced on April 26.
Fenil slashed Grishma’s throat in front of her brother and mother, with several bystanders filming the incident on their mobile phones. During the hearing on Thursday, the Surat Sensions Court convicted Fenil but did not impose a sentence.
The prosecution has sought stringent punishment for Goyani saying that no woman will feel safe if he is given a lighter sentence. It also said that his brutal act was pre-planned and calculated.
Grishma’s family has demanded a death penalty. The defence meanwhile argued that there is no reason to believe that death penalties reduce crime in the society.
“Every saint has a past, every criminal has a future and instead of considering Fenil a ‘beast’, one must look at his future,” the defence lawyer had said.
