Members of Maha Gujarat Bank Employees’ Association (MGBEA) announced a nationwide strike to protest from March 26 to March 29.
The unions claim that more than 5 lakh bank employees and officials will participate in the strike.
The strike has been called to oppose the government’s move to privatize public sector banks and the Banking Laws Amendment Bill 2021.
On March 28 and 29, banks will remain shut due to a strike, while on March 26 and 27, they will be closed due to bank holidays.
“Bankers may be protesting over a genuine issue but doing so just ahead of financial year closing is not fair because it will put businesses in a fix. A lot of transactions are made to close the account books. Unpaid dues are cleared and tax payments made ahead of the financial year-end,” said Jayendra Tanna, president, Gujarat Traders’ Federation.
