Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has announced that one of the oldest Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar flyover bridge (FOB) will be closed for vehicular traffic from March 9 to May 5 for repair and restoration.
The FOB passes through the bustling textile market district of the city. Every day, hundreds of commuters cross the FOB to reach to places like the railway station,New Civil Hospital, collection office, the police commissioner’s office, and other important government offices.
Municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani declared the publicly known information in this regard on Monday.
SMC has recommended that travellers take the BRTS canal road between Udhna and Punagam as an alternate route. Beginning on Tuesday, traffic flow will be analysed and issues will be discussed.
The renovation process will begin if the road network remains smooth. A large police force will be deployed on the Ring Road to ensure that the road beneath the FOB is safe for vehicle movement.
Throughout the day, the lanes around the buildings are used to load and unload textile products. To keep the lanes clean and ensure smooth traffic flow, 60 traffic cops and 60 traffic brigade jawans have been deployed.
The pay-for-parking system has been phased out. Parking in front of the buildings on Ring Road will be prohibited until the end of the FOB cycle.
