Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi has not only received positive reviews, but it is also performing well at the box office around the world. According to Box Office India, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film is doing very well in the Indian box office with the collection of more than Rs 10 crore on its opening day. The film released in theaters on Saturday, February 25
It’s also the third-largest opening of the pandemic, behind Sooryavanshi and 83. The collections of Gangubai Kathiawadi exceeded 83 in a number of locations throughout Mumbai, which is a significant achievement.
Alia Bhatt is the leading lady in the much-anticipated film Gangubai Kathiawadi. She plays the role of a sex worker who works her way up and gains political power in Kamathipura, the red light district in Mumbai. Apart from Bhatt, the film also casts Ajay Devgn and Shantanu Maheshwari in pivotal roles.
None the less, this is a good start for Gangubai, and the best for a solo Alia Bhatt film by surpassing her previous best, Raazi. The numbers coming in middle of a pandemic makes it an even bigger achievement and this also suggests that a double-digit day one was on cards if not for the pandemic.
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial has been produced by Jayantilal Gada’s Pen India Limited. The film is based on a chapter from the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ by author Hussain Zaidi.
The film is currently competing with Valimai, a film starring Ajith Kumar and Huma Qureshi that was released in theatres on February 24, one day before Alia Bhatt’s film.
