Ahmedabadis’ long-held dream of a floating restaurant on Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront is about to become a reality. Before the Assembly elections, AMC has been attempting to establish two floating restaurants in Gujarat.
Previously, the plan was to establish a floating restaurant on the west riverfront with capacity to serve 50 to 100 people. The BJP then proposed two floating restaurants in the AMC to ensure that people in the city’s eastern outskirts did not miss out on the new developments.
One of the two qualified companies in the city to carry out the project is Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRDCL). The review process is expected to be completed soon, after which two companies will be chosen. Companies are required to open the restaurant within six months of receiving the work order.
The application was scheduled for October 2021, with the goal of opening the River Cruise and Floating Restaurant by March of this year.
It is learned that two companies are in the race to get the project. One of them is involved in the travel business while the other is a local restaurant chain.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner RK Mehta told the media, “It has been decided to develop two floating restaurants on the Sabarmati riverfront and applications from companies are being scrutinized. Work order will be given after opening the bid. It will take six months to develop the restaurant after final approval. “
Tenders were first solicited for the development of a floating restaurant seven years ago, and one company expressed interest. It did not, however, make it to the final stage because AMC officials failed to assure the company that sufficient water levels would be maintained to keep the restaurant open. The project was then postponed.
SRDCL proposed a restaurant and river cruise project again in 2019. Several companies made representations to officials, but the plan was delayed due to covid.
