Covid-19 cases decline sharply for second straight day, deaths surge

Covid-19 cases declined sharply for the second consecutive day in the state even though the number of deaths continued to rise sharply.

The state reported 13,805 Covid-19 cases on Monday, 17% lower than Sunday’s 16,617 cases, which itself was nearly 28% lower than the previous day’s count of 23,150, as per the state health department’s Covid-19 bulletin.

Daily cases declined by more than a third in Ahmedabad city, falling to 4,361 from 6,191. The new cases also dropped sharply in Vadodara city, coming down to 2,534 from 2,876, and in Surat city from 1,512 to 1,136. However, Rajkot city reported a sharp jump in cases, with the number more than doubling to 889 from 410 a day earlier.

Vadodara rural reported 721 cases, and Gandhinagar city 325. Bhavnagar city (295), Kutch (282), Morbi (267), Rajkot rural (260), Patan (242), Surat rural (238) and Mehsana (231), reported more than 200 cases.

While cases are declining, the death toll has continued the upward trend. On Monday, 25 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus as against 19 on Sunday and 15 a day before that. The cumulative death toll rose to 10,274.

Ahmedabad city accounted for six Covid-related deaths, and Surat city, Vadodara city, and Jamnagar city three each. Rajkot city reported two deaths, while Vadodara rural, Bhavnagar city, Kutch, Surat rural, Mehsana, Valsad, Panchmahals, and Bhavnagar rural one each.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in the state was 1.35 lakh with 13,469 more patients recovering from the Coronavirus. So far, over 9.30 lakh patients or 86.49% of patients have recovered from the virus.

More than 1.70 lakh vaccines were administered in the state in the last 24 hours to take the cumulative number of doses given to 9.65 crore.
