The State Goods and Service Tax (SGST) department in Gujarat discovered a bogus billing operation worth Rs 285 crore during statewide searches against scrap traders.
The department looked in 30 places, including ten in Bhavnagar, twelve in Rajkot, seven in Surat, and one in Ahmedabad.
The department discovered 17 traders involved in the racket after going through the accounts, digital data, and purchase and sale details seized during the searches. The searches took place from January 7 to 11, according to SGST officials. The department has so far discovered bogus bills totaling Rs 285 crore, with Rs 53 crore in input tax credit being passed on to certain beneficiaries.
