The Jewelry Manufacturers Association has started a free jewellery design course for the youth, which would normally cost around Rs 35000. Over 30% of skilled artisans from West Bengal and Maharashtra did not return after the first and second waves of the covid-19 pandemic, resulting in a shortage of skilled artisans in Surat and Rajkot.
The course is designed for young people who have completed their regular studies. After receiving a grant from the World Bank to develop skilled artisans in the jewellery manufacturing sector, the government ordered the course to begin.
Artisans who complete the course with some manufacturing experience will be offered an internship with a monthly stipend of Rs 7000. The course takes place in the Surat Diamond Association’s building. The manual design and hand sketch design courses will be taught after the 15th of January. Admission is granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
