The Gujarat government extended the night curfew in eight of its major cities until December 31 due to the rising threat of Omicron spread and the expected footfall during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The night curfew will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, and Junagarh until December 31.
Restaurants in these cities are permitted to operate at 75% capacity until midnight, while cinemas are permitted to operate at 100% capacity.
The news comes after Gujarat reported four more cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus on Monday, bringing the state’s total to 11.
A 45-year-old NRI and a teenage boy from the United Kingdom, a Surat-based woman who had recently visited Dubai, and a Tanzanian national are the new Omicron variant patients.
The non-resident Indian tested positive for coronavirus infection in an RT-PCR test performed at the Ahmedabad international airport shortly after his arrival from the United Kingdom on December 15, according to a health department official on Sunday.
The total number of Omicron cases in India has risen to 153, with infections reported in Maharashtra (54), Delhi (22), Rajasthan (17), Karnataka (14), Telangana (20), Gujarat (11), Kerala (11), Andhra Pradesh (1), Chandigarh (1), Tamil Nadu (1), and West Bengal (1).
