A woman from Ghodasar was duped out of Rs 2.85 lakh by a fraudster posing as a Spanish gynaecologist. He defrauded her under the false pretense of providing medicine to treat her gynaecological illness.
Priti Mistry, a 36-year-old resident of Pushp Residency, filed a complaint with cybercrime police on Tuesday, alleging that the accused, who identified himself as Cedric Lawrence from Spain, sent her a friend’s request on an online platform on December 8, 2020.
Lawrence allegedly pretended to be a gynaecologist working for a Spanish government hospital. “I trusted him and discussed the various gynaecological issues I was experiencing. Lawrence used to give me advice on how to handle the problems “She informed the authorities.
Mistry also sent Lawrence her medical reports, after which the Spaniard informed her that he was sending her some medicines to help her recover from her illness. On December 21, 2020, she received a phone call from a man who identified himself as an employee of a courier delivery company and informed her that she would have to pay Rs 36,000 to retrieve the medicine parcel from Spain.
“I informed him that I would not be receiving the package. Lawrence then called to beg me to accept the package. He told me that if the parcel is returned, he will lose his job at the hospital because he sent it without the approval of Spanish authorities “She informed the cops.
Mistry paid the money via online transaction and instructed the courier employee to deliver the parcel. “After a while, I received another call from a courier firm employee who informed me that they had discovered $15,000 in cash inside the parcel and that I needed to pay Rs 95,000. I paid the money, but I received another call from the courier company. They demanded Rs 1.55 lakh this time to convert the dollars into Indian currency. After I paid the money, Lawrence and the delivery man went silent “she posited Mistry then filed a complaint alleging cheating, breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Information Technology Act.
