Torrent Power, Ahmedabad’s electricity supplier, has begun a massive search operation in the Dariyapur area of the city. Approximately twenty officers from the company are leading a team of 150 workers in this raid.
Dariyapur, an area within Ahmedabad’s walled city distinguished by its labyrinth of pols and residential maze, is co-habited by Hindus and Muslims. Old-timers may recall that certain areas of the neighbourhood were particularly feared during times of communal strife. Though the stereotype is being challenged in recent times, the residents of this area have also demonstrated a propensity to regroup and resist any outside intervention.
The fact that 200 police officers, including one PI, two ACPs, and one DCP, have joined the raid emphasizes the importance of the operation.
It is believed that there are numerous illegal electric connections in the area, causing significant financial loss to both the company and the honest subscribers. The area’s widespread electricity theft has gone unchecked due to the inability of the smaller teams to enforce the rules.
As soon as the officers started the raid some people pelted stones at the officers and police
Four Torrent and four police officers were injured in the attack.
Another police team was dispatched to the scene after the attack was reported. Attempts are being made by the local police to register a case against the attacker and take action against him.
