On Sunday, a woman (30) from Bapunagar filed a dowry harassment case with the police, stating that her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law attacked and abused her for bringing 250g less gold in dowry.
After being abused by her mother-in-law on November 1, she went to her parents’ residence and filed a complaint under IPC Sections 498A (husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty), 323 (punishment for deliberately causing harm), and 294 (b) (uttering obscene words).
The woman revealed that she married a Bapunagar resident in 2016 and that she was satisfied with her matrimonial house for around two months.
Soon after, her in-laws began abusing and humiliating her for not bringing 500g of gold in her dowry but only 250g.
They threatened her with being forced to live and work as a servant until she produced another 250g gold from her parents, since other members of the community were ready to pay 500g gold in dowry to marry off their daughters’ hands.
According to the woman, they forced her to do menial work and treated her like a maidservant.
She claimed she went to see her parents following this, but they persuaded her to return and start over. But nothing changed, and her in-laws continued to torture her.
Finally, on November 1, when she was working in the kitchen, her mother-in-law entered and aggressively abused her over utensil noises.
She then went to her parents’ house and filed her complaint.
