The bodies of a 21-year-old male and a 19-year-old woman were discovered floating in the river near Shahpur by Sabarmati Riverfront (East) police.
On Saturday evening, officers found the body. The couple, Rakesh and Gungun Datania, were Shahpur residents who had committed suicide, according to the cops. According to the officers, the couple was in despair because they believed their families would not allow them to live together.
Their families, on the other hand, claim that they were willing to marry them and that they had begun planning their wedding after they went missing on November 10.
“Rakesh and Gungun were in a relationship for nearly a year but their families were ignorant of it,” a police official stated. The officer continued: “When they finally revealed their relationship to their families, they met some opposition. The families, it appears, sought time to think about it.”
But the couple did not accept their families’ approach and decided to flee from their homes.
“They may have been afraid that their family members would punish them and that they would be defamed in society,” the officer explained. “As a result, they attempted to jump into the river and committed suicide.”
According to preliminary evidence, the couple died roughly three days before their bodies were discovered.
“They may have committed suicide by jumping into the river on the same day they left their house,” the officer stated. Their family members tried calling them, but their cellphones were turned off, he added. “Their family members told us that they were planning to marry shortly and were looking for them,” the cop explained.
Police have started the investigation into a case of accidental death.
