Ahmedabad: Sabarmati Riverfront, Kankaria lakefront, and public transport facilities are among the places that will be out of bounds from today for people who are not fully vaccinated. The decision was announced by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday evening following the rise in Covid-19 cases in the city in the last two days.
Since September, people who had received even one dose of the vaccine could visit the riverfront, Kankaria, swimming pools, sports, complexes, libraries, AMTS, BRTS, etc.
“People who are not fully vaccinated will not be allowed in these and other AMC-run facilities from Friday. The Covid-19 vaccination certificate will be checked, and only those people who have received both doses will be allowed entry,” said AMC standing committee chairman Hitesh Barot.
More than 73.93 lakh vaccine doses have been administered in Ahmedabad city so far, which includes 46.93 lakh who have received at least one dose, and just over 27 lakh who have received both doses. However, as per AMC data, more than 9.30 lakh people have not taken the second dose despite being eligible. This includes 2.58 lakh whose second dose is due for more than six weeks and 3.50 lakh whose second jab is due for 3-6 weeks.
“The decision to bar entry to public spaces for people who are not fully vaccinated is to give a push to vaccination. We have set up vaccination booths at AMTS and BRTS stations, malls, hospitals, and other places, and we want everyone to get fully vaccinated,” said an AMC official.
The desperate measure comes even as the corporation declared 20 houses in a residential society in Isanpur as a micro containment zone. This is after a gap of more than five-and-a-half months that such a zone has been notified. The AMC health department will kick off house-to-house surveillance and screening camp from today.
