Ahmedabad: A senior resident doctor at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital endeavored self-destruction by infusing himself with medical drugs in his room at the BJ Medical College’s PG Hostel
The incident came to light after the resident doctor’s colleague walked into his room in the morning. He was rushed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital where the medical staff had to resuscitate him since they could not detect his pulse.
Dr Karan (name changed) completed his studies from IKDRC in July this year and joined Ahmedabad Civil Hospital as a senior resident doctor . He stays in room number D-105 on the ground floor of Block 1. He belongs to Saputara in Dangs district.
On Monday morning, Dr Karan was supposed to leave for his shift. Around 8 am, his colleague went to his room so they could leave together. When repeated knocking on the door did not elicit a response, the colleague raised an alarm and gathered junior resident doctors who reside in the same block.
One of the doctors removed the glass louvers from the window and a doctor managed to enter the room and open the door for the others.
Dr Karan’s pulse was found to be dropping after which he was rushed to Civil Hospital in a car. By the time Dr Karan was taken to the trauma centre, the doctors on duty could not detect his pulse and had to resuscitate him. He is admitted to the ICU ward of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital where he is currently recuperating.
Cops have begun investigation into the case; Dr Karan’s parents have also been informed. While they did not come across any suicide note from the room, they found a PlayStation remote along with medical books on the table. They also found a Doraemon pillow on the bed.
Usually, there is a provision for accommodation of two people each in the hostel block, but he was living alone. As per a former faculty, the doctor, in his late 20s, was a bright student.
Additional Superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel said, “Currently, the senior resident doctor is unconscious. We had a word with his colleague but they are also unaware if there was anything that was bothering him.”
