Ahmedabad: Finally, Ahmedabad’s Shela Gram Panchayat and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) have answered citizens’ complaints after Mirror highlighted their misery.
The residents of Sakar County had complained to the Shela Gram Panchayat about foul smell, mosquito-breeding and unhygienic conditions created by labourers hired by Club O7. The labourers were lodged in an open ground adjacent to the society.
The labourers defecated in the open leading to foul smell. Moreover, waterlogging in the plot caused extensive mosquito-breeding.
Following the Mirror report highlighting the issues of the residents, the Gram Panchayat spun into action by acting against the Club O7 management. They got the plot cleaned and issued a warning to the club management to keep the surroundings clean, said a source close to the development.
Later, AUDA had also sent a health team to investigate the situation and check the well-being of the labourers. They too are taking corrective measures to ensure they get proper living conditions.
“We had sent JCB machines, other equipment and manpower to get the plot cleaned as we got to know the gravity of the situation. We have also warned the owners of Club O7 to ensure that conditions that jeopardise both citizens and labourers are not created,” Ajay Solanki of Shela Gram Panchayat said.
Sakar County is a 175-bungalow scheme in Shela, adjacent to Club O7. According to Sakar County residents, several children and elderly people had contracted dengue and chikungunya because of the unhygienic conditions in the open plot occupied by labourers.
Another corrective measure that AUDA has taken is: they have begun resurfacing roads in Shela that were in a state of disrepair for the past two years.
The Shela residents dreaded venturing out in their vehicles lest they get damaged in cratered roads, a situation compounded manifold by monsoons.
Located along the SP Ring Road, Shela is witnessing a real estate boom with around 200 residential projects in progress. The houses here are in the range of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 6 crore but the poor civic amenities have left the residents disappointed.
According to an AUDA official, they have started resurfacing the two main roads – VIP road and Club O7 road.
Karan Khanna, a Shela resident, said, “We are happy that the resurfacing of arterial roads has finally begun. But the inner connecting roads in the area are also in poor condition and need repair. We hope AUDA will resurface them and address the issue of non-functional street lights as well.”
