Ahmedabad: A little over 56% of votes were cast in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections on Sunday, officials said.
Voting took place from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sunday for 44 seats of 11 wards of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. The State Election Commission said 1,58,532 out of 2,81,897 registered voters exercised their right to vote, for an overall voting percentage of 56.24%. The voter turnout among male voters was 59.27% among male voters and 53.02% among female voters.
“The voting was peaceful, and no untoward incident was reported,” GC Brahmbhatt, Secretary of State Election Commission, said in a statement.
The counting of votes will be undertaken on October 5, Tuesday. The results are expected by the afternoon.
Voting was also held for two seats of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Sunday. The voter turnout in Ahmedabad city was extremely disappointing as 23.33% of votes were cast in one seat, and 27.20% in the other. Just over 48.5% voting was recorded for the lone seat of Junagadh Municipal Corporation.
By-elections were also held for 45 seats of 29 municipalities, eight seats of seven district panchayats, and 48 seats of 41 taluka panchayats. The results of these seats will also be declared on Tuesday.
