Ahmedabad: A 36-year-old patient in the city got the heart from a brain-dead 41-year old man for a transplant. To transport the heart the green corridor has been created which traversed 12 km in 11 minutes.
The generous donation by the family of Mukeshsinh Solanki while they battled unimaginable grief heralds a major milestone for the public healthcare system in the city.
This is the first heart donation to be carried out by Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, the largest government hospital in the state. Previously, heart donations have only come from Surat NCH, also a government hospital.
Ahmedabad Civil Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said, “It is a matter of great pride for us that a heart donation has taken place from our hospital, which is extremely rare. A total of five organs including the heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas were graciously donated by the family of Mukeshsinh Solanki, a resident of Junagadh.”
In the nine months since Ahmedabad Civil Hospital became an organ retrieval centre, 11 organ donations have taken place. This is the third organ donation in the past nine days.
Notably, it is also the fifth intra-city heart transplant where the organ donation as well as transplant has taken place in Ahmedabad itself, said Dr Dhiren Shah of CIMS Hospital.
Dr Shah carried out the transplant into the body of a 36-year-old man from Morbi whose heart was pumping blood at just 10% capacity. Notably, all 17 intra-state heart transplants in Gujarat have been carried out at CIMS Hospital as it is the only registered centre in the state.
