GMC, two wards of AMC to see elections on Oct 3

Two wards of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will see bypolls in October. The State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday announced that polls for Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and bypolls for several other local bodies in the state will be held on October 3. The polls will be held from 7 am to 6 pm.

As per a release from the government, notification for the election will be done on September 13, while the last date for filing nominations is September 18.

The last date for withdrawal of nomination will be September 21 while the counting will be held on October 5. Re-election if needed will be held on October 4.

In AMC, wards no 3 and 45 will see bypolls.  Junagadh municipal corporation will also see bypolls for one seat. Polls for 39 vacant seats in various municipalities will also be held on October 3.

Thara, Bhanvad and Okha municipalities will see mid-term polls.

The others that will see bypolls include municipalities of Vadnagar, Mehsana, Bhachau, Valsad, Umargam, Gandevi, Bilimora, Bharuch, Radhanpur, Limbdi, Chansama, Surendranagar, Lunawada, Dwarka, Kheda, Dakor, Mehmadabad, Bavla, Barej, Dhandhuka, Upleta, Mansa, Visavadar, Manadar, Tadaja, Dhanera, Tarsadi and Modasa among others. Bypolls will also be held for eight seats in various district panchayats and 47 taluka panchayats.

On April 11 this year, the SEC postponed the general elections of GMC which was scheduled to be held on April 18.

The polls were postponed as the state was battling a surge in COVID cases and almost all the political parties had requested the same.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had also written to the SEC to postpone the Gandhinagar civic polls stating that if the polls were held there would be a large gathering of people which could exacerbate the COVID situation.

The SEC had, before the postponement, announced that elections would be held on April 18 and counting of votes would take place on April 20.
